Barack Obama has won the South Portland Democratic Party’s Presidential Caucus, winning in every election district and in the city as a whole. Obama has earned 53 delegates to the State Democratic Party Convention while Hillary Clinton took 27 delegates. Dennis Kucinich has dropped out of the race, but his supporters were still able to garner one delegate as they urged caucus-goers to show their support for his ideas.
More than a thousand South Portland Democrats braved the weather and endured long waits to express their presidential preference at this year’s caucus. The city clerk was onhand and was quickly overwhelmed with local voters wishing to register as Democrats in order to participate. Democrats packed the high school gymnasium and parking lots overflowed with caucus participants as well as theatre-goers attending the final performance of “High School Musical” in the auditorium. Barack Obama has also won the State of Maine as a whole. According to the New York Times, with 99 percent of the participating precincts reporting, Obama leads in state delegates elected over Clinton:
Obama has 2,079 (59.5%); Clinton has 1,397 (39.9%), with 18 uncommitted.
