Wellstone Film Series Screens Marshall Curry Film: "Street Fight" on May 31st

Directed by Marshall Curry, the film focuses on the “no-holds-barred battle between two African American Democrats for the mayoralty of Newark, New Jersey, in 2002.” Kevin Crust of the Los Angeles Times, who found the story extremely compelling, felt that where Curry really succeeded was in “addressing politics and race in a way that allows events to speak for themselves.” While filming, Curry’s film crew was ejected at a public rally despite Curry having gotten permission to attend.  At one event the mayor (Sharpe James) approached the camera himself and had his security shut down the filming.  For Michael Atkinson of The Village Voice, “Street Fight has enough cultural crosscurrents to fill out a novel.”

This will be the last film of the monthly Wellstone Documentary Film Series for the 2006-2007 season.  We will resume in the fall for 2007-2008.  I hope you can attend.  Please note that this showing is on a Thursday evening, May 31st at 6:30.
