<img src="http://www.cascointeractive.com/images/Michele-Parry-web2.jpg" / align="left" hspace="5" vspace="5">Nominations for Chair of the South Portland Democrats will be accepted at our regular monthly meetings on Wednesday, January 28 and Wednesday, February 18. At the latter meeting, nominations will cease and a new Chair will be elected. South Portland Democrats interested in running for the position also have the option of notifying the committee by email at sopodems@hotmail.com

Ms. Parry is the first candidate to throw her hat into the ring to finish out the term of Chair, set to run until the next party caucus. Michele Parry joined TD Banknorth in 2004 and assists in the management of the Higher Education Group, focusing on educational clients. She is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine, with a B.A. in English. Michele lives in South Portland with her husband, Jon Parry.

“Just as President-Elect Obama is building his team and preparing to assume the great challenges that face him come January 20th, we should likewise be preparing for what comes ahead,” Parry continued. “Now is the time to continue building on the grassroots approach that proved so effective for Democrats in this election year. As Chair, I will work diligently to keep this momentum going and focus on increasing community involvement and on fundraising activities. I know that you are all committed to the success of our party and I would greatly appreciate your support to help achieve it.”

The remaining officers of the South Portland Democrats plan to finish out their two-year terms, having been elected at the presidential caucus in February 2008. The other officers are: Matt Beck, Vice Chair; Alan Mills, Treasurer; and Tom Ayres, Secretary.

This has been a great learning experience for me. I have enjoyed working with all of the dedicated Democrats in South Portland and throughout our great State of Maine. I thank my fellow officers and sub-committee members for their unwavering dedication and support. It is now time to give someone else an opportunity to serve as Chair and bring forth new ideas and goals for 2009.

I look forward to continuing to participate in our committee’s grassroots efforts to bring out the vote and get our local Democrats involved on issues that are so important to the growth and well being of our community. I’m most appreciative for the chance to serve.

This November, three city council seats are up for election, including the District Two seat being sought by Patti Smith. Patti has the knowledge, skills and professionalism to warrant your support and your vote.

South Portland needs councilors who will work together professionally and collaboratively; councilors with a long-term strategic vision and sound decision-making skills. We need councilors who will listen, look at the bigger picture, cut through the political bluster and ego, abandon narrow special interests and entrenched points of view, and make their decisions based on what is in the best interests of the City and its residents.

Patti Smith—with her 20+ years of human resources, business management, and community volunteerism experience—will be just such a councilor.

Patti believes in accessibility and transparency. We encourage you to contact Patti directly at: Patti@PattiSmithforSouthPortland.com or to visit her website at: http://www.pattismithforsouthportland.com for more information.

Because of our belief in Patti, we have agreed to help her campaign raise $1,500. This money has been earmarked for signs and literature to inform voters of Patti’s qualifications, positions and goals for South Portland.

To accomplish this we need your help! If one hundred of our neighbors donate $15 each we will accomplish our goal. Please mail your check (in any amount) to:

We hope you share this vision and can offer your support.

Please join us in casting a vote for community, sustainability, and progress on November 4th by electing Patti Smith to the South Portland City Council.

Another option is calling the South Portland City Clerk’s office and asking to have an absentee ballot mailed to you. Maine voters can then drop off their absentee ballot with the clerk or mail it back to the municipal office at the address indicated. It’s a good idea to contact the City Clerk if you have any questions. Those who choose to mail their ballots should take care to allow enough time for it to arrive well before the polls are closed on Election Day. In 2004, state officials reported that 166,000 Mainers voted by absentee ballot, and that number is expected to increase this year.

In Maine, if you already are registered to vote, you do not need to provide any proof of identification in order to receive a ballot. You can register up to and including Election Day. Maine law does require proof of age, identity and residency for those who register 20 days or fewer before Election Day.
The people we talked to were shocked to learn about Collins’ tendency to say one thing and do another. But they were excited to learn that Democratic Congressman Tom Allen is ready to take on Collins in November.

The enthusiasm shows. Last quarter, Collins only out raised Allen by a scant $56,000. That’s a tiny margin for an incumbent in danger of losing her seat.

Everyone agrees we need change from George Bush’s failed status quo. Our job is to make sure they know Susan Collins was a big part of these failures.
